Text: “The landslides in Rio de Janeiro”

In November 2011, landslides happened in Rio de Janeiro state and killed ten adults and one child.

According to the local fire service, a boulder slid down a slope hitting a group of houses in Niteroi.

Local media said at least 10 people were rescued, including two children.

Landslides and floods are prone to happen in Brazil. The most deadly was in 2011, when whole hillsides collapsed after heavy rain and many people died.

Text: “Do you know why natural disasters happen?”

Natural disasters may be included by many phenomena, such as floods, landslides, erosion, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, storms, droughts, and others. Beside the intensity of the natural phenomena , the fast urbanization process verified in the last decades, in many parts of the world, including Brazil, due to the growth of the cities, many times in inappropriate occupation areas, increasing dangerous situations and risk of natural disasters.
